What to Expect

The Colonoscopy Process

1

Preparation

A bowel preparation laxative is taken the day before to clear the colon. Fasting from midnight is required.

2

Sedation

You will receive intravenous sedation for comfort. Most patients sleep through the procedure.

3

The Procedure

A flexible colonoscope is gently passed through the rectum. The entire colon is examined, typically taking 20–40 minutes.

4

Polyp Removal

Any polyps found are removed immediately during the same procedure — no need for a return visit.

5

Recovery & Results

You are monitored for 1–2 hours in recovery. Results and a full report are discussed with Dr. Vinod before discharge.

FAQ

Colonoscopy Dubai — Common Questions

Is colonoscopy painful?

Colonoscopy is performed under conscious sedation, so most patients feel little to no discomfort. Some patients experience mild bloating or cramping afterwards, which resolves within a few hours.

How long does a colonoscopy take?

The procedure itself takes 20–45 minutes. With preparation, sedation, and recovery, most patients spend 2–3 hours at HealthBay Clinics, Al Wasl, Dubai.

What is the difference between colonoscopy and gastroscopy?

A colonoscopy examines the large bowel (colon and rectum) from below. A gastroscopy (OGD) examines the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum from above. Both use a flexible camera. Dr. Vinod can arrange combined upper and lower endoscopy when needed.

Who should have a bowel cancer screening colonoscopy?

Anyone over 45, or earlier if you have a family history of colorectal cancer, personal history of polyps, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rectal bleeding, unexplained change in bowel habit, or unexplained iron deficiency anaemia.

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy in Dubai?

You will be given detailed written instructions. Typically: a low-fibre diet the day before, bowel preparation laxative in the afternoon/evening, nothing by mouth from midnight, and an arrangement for someone to drive you home after the procedure.
