Gastroscopy (EGD)
in Dubai

Diagnostic gastroscopy (OGD / EGD) at HealthBay Clinics, Dubai. Investigation of heartburn, reflux, swallowing difficulties, anaemia, and coeliac disease — performed by a UK CCT-certified gastroenterologist with 17+ years of endoscopic experience.

About the Procedure

What Is a Gastroscopy?

Diagnostic Gastroscopy

Direct visualisation of the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a thin flexible camera to identify inflammation, ulcers, and structural abnormalities.

Biopsy & Histology

Tissue samples can be taken during the procedure for microscopic analysis — essential for diagnosing coeliac disease, H. pylori infection, and Barrett's oesophagus.

Barrett's Surveillance

Monitoring of Barrett's oesophagus with structured biopsy protocols to detect early pre-cancerous changes (dysplasia).

Stricture Assessment

Evaluation of oesophageal narrowing causing swallowing difficulty. Balloon dilatation can be performed during the same procedure.

Upper GI Bleeding

Urgent gastroscopy to identify and treat sources of upper GI bleeding including ulcers, varices, and Mallory-Weiss tears.

Coeliac Disease Testing

Duodenal biopsies during gastroscopy are the gold standard for confirming coeliac disease alongside blood serology.

What to Expect

The Gastroscopy Process

1

Preparation

Fast for at least 6 hours before the procedure. Water may be taken up to 2 hours before. You will be advised if any medications need to be paused.

2

Sedation Options

Choose between a local anaesthetic throat spray (remain awake) or intravenous conscious sedation. Dr. Vinod will discuss the best option for you.

3

The Procedure

A thin flexible endoscope is gently passed through the mouth. The oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum are carefully examined. The procedure takes 5–15 minutes.

4

Biopsies

If needed, small tissue samples are taken painlessly during the procedure for laboratory analysis.

5

Recovery & Results

If sedated, you are monitored for 1–2 hours. Initial findings are discussed before discharge. Biopsy results typically take 5–7 working days.

FAQ

Gastroscopy Dubai — Common Questions

Is gastroscopy painful?

Gastroscopy is generally well tolerated. With a throat spray most patients experience only mild gagging. Under sedation, most patients remember little or nothing of the procedure. It takes just 5–15 minutes.

How long does a gastroscopy take?

The procedure itself takes 5–15 minutes. With preparation, sedation, and recovery, most patients spend 1–2 hours at HealthBay Clinics, Al Wasl, Dubai.

What is the difference between gastroscopy and colonoscopy?

A gastroscopy examines the upper GI tract (oesophagus, stomach, duodenum) via the mouth. A colonoscopy examines the lower GI tract (colon and rectum) via the rectum. Both use a flexible camera. Dr. Vinod can arrange combined upper and lower endoscopy when needed.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

If you have sedation, yes — you will need someone to accompany you home and should not drive, operate machinery, or sign legal documents for 24 hours. If you have throat spray only, you may leave independently.

How do I prepare for a gastroscopy?

Fast for at least 6 hours before the appointment. You may sip water up to 2 hours before. Take your usual medications with a small sip of water unless advised otherwise. Detailed written instructions are provided when you book.
